Fallout: New Vegas Empty
PostSubject: Fallout: New Vegas   Fallout: New Vegas I_icon_minitimeMon Oct 11, 2010 4:23 pm

Out in a week niggs, PIGGGY SUPPLEMENT THIS POST WITH INFORMATION!

PIGGGY -

Aight sons.
New Vegas is going to be banging. This is a fact.
Although Fallout 3 had some shit-ass gameplay, the new improvements to both the gunplay and generic RPG mechanics will make it ten times better.

Some shit we got.

-Iron sights, this will likely make that piece of shit VATS less necessary as you'll actually be able to hit shit outside of it now.

-Hardcore mode, you need to eat, sleep, and drink, ammo has weight and non-pussies will play this mode by default. Other stuff such as stimpaks not healing immediately and broken limbs needing to be mended with either the doctor skill or an actual doctor are also present.

-No + skill perks, instead we have unique perks that add interesting shit rather than the boring perks of Fallout 3.

-Traits are back, you get to pick your bonus + negative unique character trait like from the first two games again. Wild Wasteland will turn the game into a Fallout 2 shitfest for those who actually enjoyed the travesty that was Fallout 2's humor.

-Improved companions, one human companion and one non-human, companions now have their own beneficial perks that improve the party, a new "Nerve" stat will also make your companions more useful depending on your Charisma score. Included is a companion wheel that makes managing your companions' inventory, tactics, and etc. far easier.

-Obsidian quality writing, Alpha Protocol, despite being a steaming space-turd, had some bitching writing, and that's sure to translate over to New Vegas, what this means is that we'll have morally grey quests that aren't just "a bunch of good and evil motifs confusingly mixed together and labeled 'grey'" like most of the garbage in Fallout 3 (ie everyone is evil in the ghouls at Tenpenny Tower quest, or that shit Vampire quest that's just a recycle of the Slags from FO2).

-Improved speech options, depending on your skills you get differing speech options, however, those options will be available to characters who don't have the required skills, you'll just fail and sound like a moron however, it's the difference between "Um, I know how to blow stuff up" versus "I'm proficient with explosives and TNT and I know how to get the job done" as a terrible example. In other words, dialog options will differ based on your skills.

-New skills such as Survival which will allow you to mix things such as Stimpaks and drugs via plants and other items found in the wilderness.

-Return of Fallout 1 and 2 creatures and characters. Notably we see Marcus again, Geckos and the original Super Mutant faces (no more Orcs). Also returning are the Nightkin, NCR (New California Republic) and as a bonus there's also stuff from Van Buren (Black Isle's cancelled Fallout 3) that will be showing up again, including junk such as the Hoover Dam and Caesar's Legion.

-And much more other junk that we can talk about in the thread.

Probably not going to get at launch because I'm going to be spending my money on shit other than New Vegas when it comes out, but I expect you fools to actually either download it (as I know you will) or buy it like fruits and get back to me about actual quality from the word of mouth by other than terrible "gaming journalists."

What's got me most excited is that there are apparently quite a few references to Fallout 1 and 2 characters and events in this title, which means it'll be one of the first Fallouts with sensible and worthwhile connections to the originals in a long while.

I can't believe it's really out in a week. I will be playing the fuck out of this*

*Cue me bitching in about 10 days when I remember to go and buy it and it's sold out.

I'm looking forward to the factions too, supposedly a lot of the game dynamics will revolve around them which sounds good, MANG.

Hopefully it will be the first time they get the faction reputations right, they didn't work all that well (mostly because their impact was non-existent) in the originals, but it sounds like they have much more of a purpose in this installment.

Also I will miss Marcus pouring Minigun rounds into my spine.

You'll probably get it sooner than I do, just don't shoot everything you see when you do get your hands on the game, I want to hear about ~ * mY dIaLoGz * ~

Yep, I believe it's more than just locations and characters though, I believe weapons and perks are making their way over as well.

From what I've heard about it so far it's incredibly, unplayable with some of the bugs. Everything from central plot characters running away into the wilderness, to your character just turning invisible.

I'm definitely gonna wait a while, maybe rent it and have a got before I buy it.

Eh, Red Dead Redemption had some of the most ridiculous bugs in the world, but I still bought and played the hell out of it, I'm going to do likewise for New Vegas.*

*Translation: I am also really excited about the new Deus Ex, DON'T RUIN MY FANTASIES.

Just read a review where a dude played for 45h and encountered only minor bugs and no crashes. He played it on the PC though, while I believe most reviews are for X360.

Yeah, I should have clarified, what I saw of the bugs was all on the console versions of the game.

Still, I'm going to wait a week or two before I buy it.

Got the game. Great so far, but was displeased with how much the .223 pistol (which is called "That Gun") sucked. Maybe there are upgrades scattered about the world that make it better.

.223?

Wasn't that the first gun you had on you in the original Fallout, it was also the first one you could realisticaly afford in The Den in number 2. That weapon did suck dick later on in the first two games. Is it possible to get AP piercing ammo and cop killers like you could in the original games?

Slightly tempted to get this game now due to all the original refs.

I'm really looking forward to buying this game, although I'm probably waiting for the game of the year edition to come out (if it does). Not having iron sights in Fallout 3 made the gameplay far less entertaining, it will definitely be a nice feature.

I've gotten a chance to play it, but I am definitely going to wait for a GOTY edition or something before buying it. I'll probably rent or borrow it from a friend in the meantime.

I'm playing it, definitely like it more than F3. Quests and NPCs are more interesting, locations are more varied and there are less tunnel crawling quests and it seems to me there are much more different weapons in the game. Also the varied factions add to the game, and the world actually makes sense, like each town has it's economical function unlike in F3 where they were pretty much just random places where people live.

Better than Fallout 3 in most ways that matter. The only thing that's worse is that a fifth of the apparent map is unaccessable and it has a lot more invisible walls at the top of cliffs. Writing is far better but that's to be expected, still not as good as Fallout 1 & 2 though. Biggest disappointments are the New Vegas Strip, whose size was drastically overstated in the previews and commercials, and Caesar's Legion, as I can't think of a single reason you would want to join them unless you were playing an evil character for the sake of it.

Combat is mostly the same. Dealing with melee enemies while using a gun still involves backpedaling. Ironsights are nice but they are mostly just flavor. VATS is still overpowered. Energy Weapons have been nerfed to all shit, having worse armor piercing than guns, decaying faster than guns, and using more ammo than guns. I found a mod for that only AFTER I beat the game with an Energy Weapons character. The only real improvement is the variety, as the new weapons in the game are not simply thrown out into the game world with no concern as to whether or not they're balanced. Every weapon is "tiered" and fits into a specific role, there being early, mid, and late game pistols rifles shotguns laser weapons plasma weapons bladed weapons blunt weapons and everything in between. A nice change from Fallout 3 where there was more or less 1 "best" weapon for every weapon skill, and several weapons that were entirely useless(such as the Chinese 10mm pistol, which was inferior in every way to the 10mm pistol you start with).

I liked the way the multiple endings worked, but I can't say I was particularly impressed with the actual ending part of the ending, at least the one I got(independent). I still was very disappointed with Caesar's Legion, and found their involvement to be wasted potential.

One thing I approved of is that there is noticeably less combat in New Vegas. There's not much in terms of the Oblivionesque dungeon crawls that were in Fallout 3, but there's still plenty to make a combat-heavy character viable. To get an idea of this reduction, I found that repairing high-level weapons was actually quite difficult in New Vegas, simply because you don't fight many enemies who use them. On that note, I didn't pay much mind to the crafting system, but it seemed to be very useful for the little I got into it.

The biggest thing that holds this game back is the engine. The game is basically unplayable for me on the PC without some fix or another. The amount of NPCs that can be present onscreen without unacceptably low framerates has resulted in many areas that ought to be heavily populated being bare. The Casinos in particular seem like something out of a half-finished mod. But that being said, Obsidian did an admirable job making towns that are realistically sized(at least compared to Oblivion or Fallout 3), if not realistically inhabited.

That's basically all I really care to say. It fixes most things that are truly wrong with Fallout 3, but like every Obsidian game it shows many signs of being unfinished. As I understand it, Bethesda will be developing the DLC for the game(if any is made in the first place) so I find it difficult to remain interested. For what it was though, I enjoyed it and it's certainly a step in the right directing.
